Analytics is no longer on the sidelines and a nice to have function in a data rich organization. Analytics is taking center stage. The question is no longer “if” but “how”. Many organizations have taken the first step which is to centralize the Analytics function. It is popularly called Global Insights or Analytics Center of Excellence. While several organizations are in different stages of maturity, it continues to be a constant struggle to define a vision and an integrated plan of action to deliver on the promise.

Data expertise should not be confused with data warehouse. DW and associated tasks are best left to the IT department. Data expertise in the context of ACOE relates to handling large volumes of data, being able to summarize, draw out patterns, and more importantly realize that data is never clean and hence one needs to have the ability to handle missing data, dirty data and still carry on the projects.
Data expertise is usually developed over a period of time and people with Analytical bent of mind, who have the ability to see forests from trees are best suited for such tasks. TEG has developed a framework to identify and groom such talent to induct them into the ACOEs

Most of the Analytics projects require out of the box thinking and creative problem solving. There are only guidelines and no established rules that one has to follow every time. A training program that is rooted in building capabilities vs skills goes a long way in building quality ACOE.
